Maintaining The Fluff: Tips For Cleaning And Caring For Feather Quilts

A cosy, plush, and comfortable quilt is a coveted item for a restful night's sleep. That's precisely why quilts have gained huge popularity, owing to their unparalleled softness and inherent warmth. They promise a delightful and snug sleeping experience, making them an essential part of many bedrooms.

In this blog, we have introduced some valuable tips on preserving and washing feather quilts. Follow these steps to prolong the lifespan of your quilt and relish in restful slumber for years.

How to Maintain A Down Quilt?

Let’s face it, washing wool quilts or down quilts is not a task anyone looks forward to. It’s cumbersome, takes a long time to dry, and may not even fit in your washing machine. The longer you can go between washes, the happier you’ll be, and the longer your quilt will last.

Use the following maintenance tips to keep your quilt clean between washes.

Utilise a duvet cover: Just like a pillowcase protects a pillow, a duvet cover safeguards your quilt. It acts as a first line of defence against dirt, sweat, and stains, significantly extending the life of your down quilt. Remember to wash the duvet cover approximately once a week, treating it like the rest of your bed linens.

Avoid eating and drinking in bed: By refraining from consuming food and beverages in bed, you can keep your quilt cleaner longer and eliminate worries about stains caused by spills.

Keep pets off the bed: We understand the appeal of those adorable puppy dog eyes or the insistence of your pet to claim your bed as their own. However, try to prevent pets from accessing the bed to maintain a cleaner quilt.

Vacuum and deodorise: To freshen up your quilt, remove the duvet cover and sprinkle baking soda over it. Let it sit for a few hours, then use a brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda.

Can You Wash a Down Quilt at Home?

Washing feather quilts require more care compared to those made of down alternatives or other materials. Down feathers are delicate and valuable, making it crucial to take precautions. This is why blanket dry cleaning is usually advisable for your down quilt.

While it is better to entrust a professional cleaning service, you can choose to wash a down feather quilt at home if you want. Please keep in mind the following precautions.

Avoid top-loading washers: Never wash a down quilt in a top-loading washer, as it may become entangled and damaged by the spindle.

Opt for a commercial washing machine: Utilise a commercial washing machine instead of your home washer whenever possible. The additional space allows the quilt to circulate more gently during the wash.

Regularly fluff the comforter: During the drying process, remove your down quilt from the dryer every 30 minutes and fluff it up. Ensure the down is evenly distributed throughout, which helps maintain its loft.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean a Quilt
  1. Check for any stains on the quilt. If found, spot-clean them using an enzymatic cleaner. If the stain is caused by food or liquid spillage, use colour-safe bleach. Pull the fabric of your quilt away from the down, preventing any damage to the down due to cleaning products.
  2. Put the quilt into the washing machine. Ensure there is enough space inside for the water and detergent to circulate freely.
  3. Put on the gentle washing mode using cold water. Hot water may damage the down feathers.
  4. Once the wash cycle finishes, put on another rinsing cycle without the detergent. This will clean out any remaining soap residue. Next, remove the quilt, rearrange it and put it back inside. Go through one more rinsing cycle to ensure every corner of the quilt is exposed to the washing. The two extra cycles are important as detergent residue can flatten the down’s loft.

Although down quilts are undeniably exceptional, they require special care and attention. A simpler and more convenient solution is machine-washable quilts, which are designed for easy cleaning and drying. These quilts are specifically crafted to withstand the rigours of machine washing, allowing you to enjoy a hassle-free cleaning experience.
